The Gross Truth About Ear Candling (And Why It Doesn’t Work)

At Aurora Audiology, we’re often asked about ear candling. Is it safe? Does it work? Should you try it at home? Let’s clear things up—pun intended.

🔥 What Is Ear Candling?

Ear candling (also called thermal-auricular therapy) involves inserting a hollow cone-shaped candle into the ear canal and lighting the outer end. The idea is that the heat and suction will “draw out” wax and toxins.

It’s become popular online and even sold in health shops, but here’s the problem:

🚫 It Doesn’t Actually Work

Scientific studies and ENT specialists around the world agree: ear candling doesn’t remove wax. In fact, what’s often shown as “wax” inside the candle after use is usually just melted candle residue.

There's no reliable evidence that it creates suction strong enough to pull anything from the ear.

⚠️ It Can Be Dangerous

Not only is it ineffective—it’s also risky. Reported dangers include:

  • Burns to the ear or face

  • Hot wax entering the ear canal

  • Blocked ears from wax being pushed further in

  • Punctured eardrums

We've seen patients who’ve come in after ear candling with worsened symptoms. What starts as a DIY fix often ends in discomfort—or worse.
