Earwax removal

Blocked ears, reduced hearing, ringing, or pressure can often be caused by ear wax build-up.

Microsuction is the safest and most effective method of ear wax removal when carried out by a trained professional.

Common symptoms of ear wax build-up

You may benefit from ear wax removal if you’re experiencing:

  • Blocked or muffled hearing

  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear

  • Ringing or buzzing (tinnitus)

  • Hearing aids whistling or sounding blocked

  • Discomfort after using ear drops

Ear wax problems are very common and do not reflect poor hygiene.

Why microsuction?

Microsuction is now considered the gold-standard method of ear wax removal.

Unlike syringing, microsuction:

  • Does not involve water

  • Is precise and controlled

  • Is suitable for most adults

  • Allows direct visualisation of the ear canal

This makes it safer and more comfortable when performed correctly.

What happens at your appointment

Your appointment includes:

  1. A brief discussion about your symptoms

  2. Otoscopy (a detailed look inside the ear)

  3. Microsuction ear wax removal if appropriate

  4. A final ear check and clear explanation

If no wax is present, we’ll tell you — no unnecessary treatment.

Is ear wax removal safe?

When carried out by a trained audiologist using microsuction, ear wax removal is safe and well tolerated.

We do not carry out treatment if:

  • The ear canal is inflamed or infected

  • There is a high risk of complications

Your safety always comes first.

Do I need ear drops beforehand?

In many cases, softening drops can help.

If drops are required, we’ll advise you clearly.
If not, treatment can often proceed immediately.
