As the weather warms up and flowers start to bloom, many people look forward to getting outdoors again â but for some, spring brings an unexpected symptom: blocked or muffled ears.
If youâve noticed a sudden fullness, buzzing, or pressure in your ears, youâre not alone. Weâve seen a noticeable rise in patients reporting these symptoms around this time of year.
đ So what causes blocked ears in spring?
There are a few common culprits:
1. Seasonal Allergies and Sinus Congestion
With pollen levels on the rise, your sinuses can become inflamed or congested â and that affects your ears, too. The Eustachian tubes, which help equalise pressure in the ears, can become blocked by fluid or inflammation.
2. Changes in Air Pressure
Spring weather can be unpredictable. Sudden changes in temperature or air pressure can affect how your ears equalise â especially if your sinuses are already under pressure.
3. Earwax Shift
Sometimes, temperature and activity changes cause existing earwax to shift and temporarily block the ear canal â especially if you're using headphones or hearing aids.
â What can help?
Stay hydrated â thinner mucus = better drainage.
Try gentle pressure equalisation â sip water, yawn, or pinch your nose and blow gently.
Use a decongestant if allergies or sinus pressure is the cause (check with your pharmacist first).
Avoid inserting anything into your ears, like cotton buds â this can push wax deeper.
đ When to get it checked
If the blocked sensation doesnât ease within a few days, or if it affects your hearing or balance, itâs best to have it assessed. Sometimes it's wax, sometimes sinus-related â and occasionally something else entirely. We can help you get to the bottom of it.
